Lawn Area Calculator
Measure your lawn area to determine how much seed, sod, fertilizer, or other landscaping materials you need.
Formula & Explanation
The lawn area calculator uses the following formula: 1. Rectangular area = Length (ft) × Width (ft) 2. Adjusted area = Rectangular area × (1 - Shape adjustment ÷ 100) 3. Area in square yards = Area (sqft) ÷ 9 For irregular or complex lawn shapes, the shape adjustment percentage accounts for portions that won't be seeded or sodded (patios, gardens, obstacles, etc.).
Assumptions
- •Lawn shape is approximated as rectangular; use shape adjustment for irregular areas
- •Shape adjustment represents the percentage of the rectangular area that will not be treated (patios, trees, flowerbeds, shade areas, etc.)
- •For very irregular shapes, break the lawn into multiple rectangles and add results
- •1 square yard = 9 square feet
- •Measurements should be taken in feet; convert inches by dividing by 12
Example Calculation
A lawn measuring 50 feet by 40 feet with 10% adjustment for irregular areas and obstacles is 1800 square feet or 200 square yards.
