Topsoil Calculator
Calculate the amount of topsoil needed for new garden beds, raised beds, or lawn renovation projects.
Formula & Explanation
The topsoil calculator uses the following formula: 1. Volume in cubic feet = Area (sqft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 12 2. Volume in cubic yards = Volume (cubic feet) ÷ 27 3. Bags needed = ceil(Volume (cubic feet) ÷ Bag size (cubic feet)) 4. Weight in tons = Volume (cubic yards) × Density (lb/cubic yard) ÷ 2000 Topsoil density depends on composition, moisture, and how it has been processed. Quality topsoil typically weighs 1100-1300 lb per cubic yard.
Assumptions
- •Quality topsoil should be dark, rich in organic matter, and free of rocks and debris
- •Typical topsoil depth for gardens is 6-8 inches; raised beds often use 8-12 inches
- •Topsoil density varies from 1100-1300 lb/cy depending on moisture and composition-verify with your supplier
- •Most topsoil comes in bags ranging from 1-3 cubic feet per bag
- •Consider adding compost or peat moss to topsoil in areas with clay-heavy soil
Example Calculation
A 100 square foot garden bed at 6 inches deep requires approximately 1.85 cubic yards (17 bags) or 1.11 tons of topsoil.

Topsoil Depth Recommendations by Application
| application | depth_inches | reason |
|---|---|---|
| Container gardens/planters | 6-8 | Sufficient for most container plants |
| Vegetable gardens | 8-12 | Deep rooting vegetables need more depth |
| Raised beds | 8-12 | Standard depth for most raised bed systems |
| Flower beds | 6-8 | Adequate for perennials and annuals |
| Lawn renovation | 3-4 | Layer over compacted soil for seeding |
