Formula & Explanation
The mulch calculator uses the following formula: 1. Volume in cubic feet = Area (sqft) × Depth (inches) ÷ 12 2. Volume in cubic yards = Volume (cubic feet) ÷ 27 3. Bags needed = ceil(Volume (cubic feet) ÷ Bag size (cubic feet)) This ensures you have enough mulch to cover your entire area to the desired depth, accounting for bag sizes available in your area.
Assumptions
- •Typical mulch depth for aesthetic purposes is 2-3 inches; up to 4 inches for fresh mulch in high-traffic areas
- •Mulch settles over time; consider ordering slightly extra or a deeper initial depth
- •Common bag sizes are 2 or 3 cubic feet; verify your local supplier for available sizes
- •Calculation assumes no waste beyond what is needed to cover the area
- •Mulch is sold in bags, so total bags are rounded up to nearest whole number
Example Calculation
A 100 square foot area covered with 3 inches of mulch requires approximately 0.93 cubic yards or 9 bags of 3 cubic foot mulch.
