Formula & Explanation

The deck joist calculator determines how many joists are needed to support your deck based on span and spacing. Formula: Joists = floor(Span ÷ Spacing) + 1 Joist spacing is measured "on center" (o.c.), meaning the distance from the center of one joist to the center of the next. This formula accounts for a joist at each end of the span plus intermediate joists at the specified spacing intervals. For decks, common spacing is: - 12" o.c. for maximum strength (typical for live loads or wider boards) - 16" o.c. for standard residential decks - 24" o.c. for very strong beams or short spans Total linear feet = Joists × Joist Length
