The deck beam calculator estimates beam requirements for your deck support system. Number of Beams = ceil(Deck Length ÷ Post Spacing) Beams run perpendicular to the deck length and rest on posts. They support the joists that run parallel to the deck length. Beam size is determined by: 1. Span (distance between posts) 2. Load from joists (affected by joist size and spacing) 3. Snow load (varies by region) 4. Wood species and grade Common beam sizing: - Single 2x8: up to 8-10 ft span - Single 2x10: up to 12-14 ft span - Single 2x12: up to 14-16 ft span - Double beams: can increase span by 20-30% IMPORTANT: This is preliminary estimating only. A structural engineer must verify beam sizing for safety.

  • Single solid beams (not doubled) are assumed for this estimate
  • Pressure-treated lumber, #2 or better grade assumed
  • Standard residential snow loads and floor loads assumed
