Deck Board Calculator

Calculate the number of deck boards needed to cover your deck surface, accounting for board width, length, gaps, and waste.

Formula & Explanation

The deck board calculator determines how many boards are needed to cover your deck surface. Formula: Boards = (Deck Area) ÷ [(Board Width + Gap Size) × Board Length] × (1 + Waste%) The effective board width includes the gap spacing to account for spaces between boards. Waste percentage covers cuts, damage, and future repairs. Standard waste allowance is 5-15% depending on layout complexity. Results are rounded up since you must purchase whole boards.

Assumptions

  • Board width is the actual dimension (5.5" for nominal 6" lumber)
  • Gap size accounts for board spacing (typical 1/8" to 1/4")
  • Waste percentage is 5-15% for typical linear layouts (increase for diagonal patterns)
  • Board length must be available for the deck width; adjust for available lengths
  • Calculations assume minimal cutting waste

Example Calculation

A 16x12 deck (192 sqft) with 6" boards spaced 1/8" apart requires 37 boards with 10% waste allowance.
