Vinyl Flooring Calculator

Calculate vinyl flooring quantity needed for your floor. Supports sheet vinyl and vinyl plank (LVP) installations.

Formula & Explanation

For sheet vinyl (length = 0): Quantity (linear feet) = (Room Area ÷ Product Width) × 12 × (1 + Waste Factor) For vinyl planks (length > 0): Quantity (planks) = Ceiling(Room Area ÷ Plank Area × (1 + Waste Factor)) Where Plank Area = (Width × Length) ÷ 144 Sheet vinyl is typically sold by the running foot in widths of 6ft, 9ft, or 12ft. Vinyl planks are sold by the individual plank and come in various dimensions.

Assumptions

  • Room is rectangular with perpendicular walls
  • All measurements are in feet for room dimensions and inches for product dimensions
  • For sheet vinyl: enterProductLength as 0 and set ProductWidth to sheet width in inches
  • For vinyl planks: enter both ProductWidth and ProductLength in inches
  • Waste factor of 15% is typical for sheet vinyl (accounts for seam waste and pattern matching)
  • Waste factor of 10% is typical for vinyl planks in straight layouts
  • Vinyl sheets commonly available in 6ft, 9ft, or 12ft widths
  • Seam requirements (for sheet vinyl) must be reviewed by installer for your specific room layout
  • Result is rounded up since you cannot purchase partial units

Example Calculation

A 12ft × 10ft room (120 sqft) with 12ft wide sheet vinyl needs 120 linear feet base. With 15% waste for seams and pattern matching, purchase 138 linear feet.
