Formula & Explanation

The number of laminate planks needed is calculated as: 1. Calculate room area: Area = Length × Width (in square feet) 2. Calculate plank area: Plank Area = (Width × Length) ÷ 144 (converting from square inches to square feet) 3. Calculate planks needed: Planks = Ceiling(Room Area ÷ Plank Area × (1 + Waste Factor)) The waste factor accounts for cuts at edges, corners, and potential breakage during installation. It is expressed as a decimal (0.10 for 10%, 0.15 for 15%, etc.).

Assumptions

  • Room is rectangular with perpendicular walls
  • All measurements are in feet for room dimensions and inches for plank dimensions
  • Planks are uniform size (all planks are the same dimensions)
  • Waste factor of 10% is typical for straight layouts
  • Waste factor of 15% is recommended for diagonal or herringbone patterns
  • Laminate is tongue-and-groove; do not account for expansion gaps in quantity (gaps are installed during finishing)
  • Result is rounded up since you cannot purchase partial planks
  • Calculations do not account for complex layout patterns

Example Calculation

A 12ft × 10ft room (120 sqft) with 8×48 inch laminate planks needs 48 planks base. With 10% waste for cuts and breakage, purchase 53 planks.
