Formula & Explanation
The stud wall calculator determines the materials needed to build a stud-framed wall. **Number of Studs** = floor(wall length (in) ÷ spacing (in)) + 1 + extra for openings Studs are vertical 2×4 members spaced 16" or 24" on-center. The formula calculates studs starting from corner studs, then adds studs at regular intervals. Additional studs are added for door and window openings (headers and trimmers). **Plate Linear Feet** = wall length × (1 bottom + 1 or 2 top plates) Plates are 2×4 members running horizontally at the top and bottom of the wall. Most walls have a single bottom plate and double top plate (3 plates total). **Board Feet** = (thickness × width × length) ÷ 12 For a 2×4 stud at 8' height (minus 3.5" for plates), board feet ≈ 2 × 4 × (8 - 3.5/12) ÷ 12 ≈ 5.2 bf per stud.
Assumptions
- •Studs are nominal 2×4 lumber, spaced 16" or 24" on-center (16" is most common for residential)
- •Stud height = wall height minus plate thickness (3.5" = 1.5" bottom + 2×1.5" top)
- •Double top plate is standard; single top plate is used in some commercial applications
- •Each door/window opening adds approximately 4 extra studs (cripples, headers, trimmers)
- •Calculation assumes straight walls; corners and intersections are simplified
- •No deduction for the band board (rim joist) or header members; calculate those separately
- •Blocking, backing, and bracing are not included; add separately as needed
- •Board feet calculation uses nominal dimensions (2×4 is actually 1.5×3.5 after planing)
Example Calculation
A 12-foot wall, 8 feet tall, with 1 door and 2 windows, spaced 16" o.c., requires 18 studs and approximately 118 board feet of material (studs + plates).
