Formula & Explanation

This calculator determines the number of studs required to frame a single wall. **Studs Needed** = floor(Wall Length in inches ÷ Spacing in inches) + 1 The formula places one stud at each end of the wall, then adds studs at regular intervals based on the specified spacing. For example, a 12 ft wall (144 inches) at 16" on-center yields: - floor(144 ÷ 16) + 1 = 9 + 1 = **10 studs** This assumes studs are placed on layout marks at 0", 16", 32", 48", ... along the wall.

Assumptions

  • Formula places studs at each end plus intermediate studs at regular intervals (e.g., 0", 16", 32", ...)
  • Does NOT include additional studs for corners, openings (door/window frames), or intersections-those must be added separately
  • Standard spacing is 16" on-center (residential) or 24" on-center (commercial or where code allows)
  • Assumes standard 2×4 or 2×6 studs; does not account for different stud sizes
  • Does not include top plates, bottom plates, blocking, or bracing

Example Calculation

A 12 ft wall framed at 16" on-center requires 10 studs: one at each end (0" and 144"), plus eight intermediate studs at 16" intervals.
