Metal Roof Cost Calculator

Estimate metal roof installation costs including materials and labor.

Formula & Explanation

Metal roof costs are based on panel quantity and labor per square: Panels Needed = ceil(Roof Area × (1 + Waste%) ÷ 40) Squares Needed = ceil(Roof Area × (1 + Waste%) ÷ 100) Material Cost = Panels × Price Per Panel Labor Cost = Squares × Labor Cost Per Square Subtotal = Material Cost + Labor Cost Tax = Subtotal × Tax % Total Cost = Subtotal + Tax Cost Per Sq Ft = Total Cost ÷ Roof Area Example: 1000 sq ft roof, $150/panel, $75/square labor, 10% waste, 8% tax - Panels = 28, Squares = 11 - Material = $4,200, Labor = $825 - Subtotal = $5,025, Tax = $402 - Total = $5,427 ($5.43/sq ft)

Assumptions

  • Metal panels average 40 sq ft coverage (varies by profile)
  • Price is per individual panel (36" × 36" standard)
  • Labor is priced per roofing square (100 sq ft) of coverage
  • Metal roofing requires specialized installation; labor rates are typically higher than asphalt
  • Does not include removal of existing roof, structural repairs, or flashing
  • Tax may vary by location and material type; verify local rates

Example Calculation

A 1000 sq ft metal roof with 10% waste costs approximately $5,427 (materials + labor + tax).
