Formula & Explanation

Gable roofs are the most common residential roof style with slopes on two sides: Roof Area = Footprint × [1 / cos(pitch angle)] Ridge Length = Building Length Squares Needed = ceil(Roof Area × 1.05 ÷ 100) The ridge line runs along the building's length from front to back. The 5% waste factor accounts for normal cutting at edges and eaves. Example: 40 × 25 ft building, 6:12 pitch - Footprint = 40 × 25 = 1000 sq ft - Pitch adjustment = 1.118x - Roof area = 1000 × 1.118 = 1118 sq ft - With 5% waste = 1174 sq ft - Squares = ceil(1174 ÷ 100) = 12 squares

Assumptions

  • Gable roofs slope on two sides with vertical gable ends
  • Ridge line runs the full length of the building
  • Waste factor of 5% is for normal edge cutting; increase for complex shapes
  • Calculations assume rectangular building footprint
  • Does not include valleys, dormers, or protrusions
  • Gable ends are assumed to be vertical (not sloped)
