Drywall Mud Calculator
Calculate joint compound (mud) requirements for drywall finishing. Adjust coverage based on finish level (light skim to heavy texture).
Formula & Explanation
This calculator estimates the amount of joint compound (mud) needed to finish drywall. **Mud Required** = Wall Area × Mud Coverage The coverage rate depends on finish quality: - **Light skim coat**: ~0.02 lbs/sqft (minimal joint finishing) - **Standard three-coat finish**: ~0.053 lbs/sqft (smooth walls, typical residential) - **Heavy texture or popcorn**: ~0.1+ lbs/sqft (thick texture coats) These are commonly cited rules of thumb; actual consumption varies by product, installer skill, and application technique.
Assumptions
- •Coverage rates (0.02, 0.053, 0.1+ lbs/sqft) are industry rules of thumb and vary by product type and application
- •Standard three-coat finish (default 0.053 lbs/sqft): one taping coat, one finish coat, one final coat
- •Light skim finish uses one thin coat over tape seams only
- •Heavy texture or popcorn finishes may require multiple passes and higher coverage
- •Does not include drywall tape, primer, or paint
- •Assumes 5/8" standard drywall thickness
Example Calculation
A 320 sqft wall finished to standard smooth quality requires approximately 17 lbs of joint compound.
